Kaiser Permanente Hawaii And Hawaii Pacific Health Vie For Maui Hospital Merger
Aug 24 15
Kaiser Permanente Inc. and Hawai'i Pacific Health are expected to submit proposals to the state on August 24, 2015, the deadline, to become a manager of the Maui state hospitals. The nonprofit hospitals are vying to take over all or part of the Maui region of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, which includes Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital & Clinic and Lanai Community Hospital. HHSC Maui Region Chief Executive Officer Wesley Lo told Pacific Business News that both potential partners "have proven they have the business formulas necessary" to preserve and expand health care services on the Valley Isle. Kaiser Permanente Hawaii President Mary Ann Barnes called it a "huge" proposal. "It's really about how you'd provide care in a community hospital - care that is of high quality, with good access, and affordable," she said.
Maui Hospitals' Path To Privatization Could Be Costly
May 4 15
Hawaii lawmakers have given their approval for the potential privatization of Maui state hospitals, a switch that could cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars, according to preliminary state estimates. House Bill 1075 CD1 passed its final reading in the House on May 1, 2015, clearing the way for the Hawaii Health System Corp. Maui hospitals - including Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital Auxiliary, Inc. and Clinic and Lanai Community Hospital - to transfer operations to a nonprofit entity. The bill, which will be sent to Gov. David Ige for his signature, authorizes the governor to lead negotiations during the transition. Hawai'i Pacific Health has been in talks with officials from the Maui region for several months, as the region faces a $28 million deficit in the upcoming year. Hawaii Government Employees Association, a vocal opponent of privatization legislation, said Monday its primary concern is for employee security and warns that the acquisition will be costly to the state and taxpayers. Executive Director Randy Perreira told PBN that any implications on job security will depend on a prospective operator's proposal.
