CUPE 3903 Reaches Tentative Agreement with York University
Mar 30 15
Local 3903 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3903), on legal strike since March 3, has reached a tentative agreement with York University. The deal was reached after a day-long bargaining session today, and was unanimously endorsed by the union's Bargaining Team. The union is now organizing a ratification vote to take place as soon as possible. The union won major concessions from York on tuition indexation for current and future students, which guarantees that any increase in tuition fees will be matched dollar-for-dollar in graduate student funding. In addition, the union won a complete reversal of the last two years of fee increases for international students. Other significant gains include recognition of LGBT as an employment equity category and better funding for graduate and research assistants. CUPE 3903 represents 3,700 education workers at York University, including teaching assistants, contract faculty, graduate assistants, and research assistants. Contract faculty ratified a deal with the university on March 9, but teaching, graduate, and research assistants rejected it. Picket lines will remain active until a ratification vote is complete.
Strike Deadline Set for March 3, 2015 at York University
Feb 18 15
Over 3,700 education workers at York University could be on strike by March 3, 2015. Representing contract faculty, teaching assistants, graduate assistants and research assistants, Local 3903 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3903) is preparing for a possible strike. The union recently voted 79.17% for a strike mandate, with 40% turnout the highest in ten years. On February 10, the Ontario Ministry of Labour issued a ‘no board’ report, which puts the union in a legal strike position as early as February 27. However, in order to maximise the chances of a negotiated settlement, the union has extended its strike deadline to March 3, 2015 scheduling three additional bargaining meetings with the Employer. The union has already organized two rounds of strike training for its members, and will host an open house for undergraduate students at its strike headquarters next week. Nearly a thousand students have emailed York's president, Mamdouh Shoukri, expressing support for the union's proposals. Both parties have been meeting with the assistance of a Ministry of Labour-appointed conciliator since January 16. CUPE 3903 members will make a final decision at a special general membership meeting on March 2, 2015 about whether to accept the Employer's final offer or go on strike.
