South Mississippi Electric Power Association, Inc. Plans to Expand its Renewable Energy Portfolio

South Mississippi Electric Power Association, Inc. plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio by purchasing all of the power produced at Origis Energy USA's proposed 52-MW solar energy facility in Lamar County, Miss. SMEPA and Origis have completed a letter of intent, the Hattiesburg-based co-op said Sept. 3, which allows the two organizations to move forward negotiating the terms of a power purchase agreement. Origis will design, develop, install and operate the facility and SMEPA will purchase all power produced at the location. The project is scheduled to begin operating by December 2016.

South Mississippi Pulls Out Of Southern Co. Project

South Mississippi Electric Power Association, Inc. dropped its plan to buy a $600 million, 15% stake in the Mississippi coal-fired power plant project spearheaded by Atlanta-based Southern Company (NYSE:SO), citing construction delays. Southern, in turn, notified state regulators that it may have to raise electricity rates for Mississippi power customers by 41%, or $37 a month for the typical household, to pay for the project.
