Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota is eliminating 73 positions, including 15 filled jobs, as part of austerity measures forced by the loss of a large contract for public employees. The job cuts were part of a comprehensive budget review that also included trimming vendor contracts, reducing expenses and reorganizing to gain efficiencies. The cuts were forced, by the loss of a contract to provide health insurance for the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System, which covers about 65,000 people. That contract was awarded to the Sanford Health Plan, which opened offices in Fargo and Bismarck and announced that it expects to hire 100 employees.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota announced that chief operating officer Tim Huckle will serve as president and CEO. Huckle had been serving as the interim chief since May, when Paul von Ebers was fired. Huckle also served as interim CEO and president in 2009 after former CEO Mike Unhjem was fired amid criticism over an expensive Caribbean retreat for the insurer's employees.
