Wayne State University Announces Appointment of Margaret E. Winters as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Effective April 8, 2013

Wayne State University announced the appointment of Margaret E. Winters as interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, effective April 8, 2013. Winters will hold the position until the university names a permanent provost following a national search. Winters, who currently serves as associate provost and associate vice president for academic personnel, will succeed Ronald T. Brown, who has accepted the position of president at the University of North Texas at Dallas. Winters has held various leadership positions during her 11 years at Wayne State, including chair of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, and founding chair of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. In her current position, she played a lead role in the negotiation of Wayne State's recently ratified collective bargaining contract with the faculty and academic staff union.

Wayne State University Reaches Tentative, Eight-Year Labor Agreement with its Faculty Union

Wayne State University has reached a tentative, eight-year labor agreement with its faculty union that could put it at odds with Lansing lawmakers over the state's right-to-work law. While heralded by union officials, the settlement was met with skepticism on February 26, 2013 by Republicans, who call it an attempt to get around the right-to-work law, which goes into effect March 27, 2013. The controversial law makes it illegal to require financial support of a union as a condition of employment, but contracts in effect on March 27, 2013 won't be affected until they expire. In recent weeks, unions at WSU and some other universities have been scrambling to extend or negotiate new labor contracts before the law kicks in. At least one area school district also has approved a new contract extending union protection. At Western Michigan University, union members planned on February 27, 2013 to protest against a reported move by the university administration to delay ratification of a tentative agreement there until March 27, 2013 so it can comply with the right-to-work law. The tentative agreement announced February 26, 2013 between Wayne State and the union says that all faculty members - whether members of the union or not - will have to pay dues to the American Association of University Professors-American Federation of Teachers. Under the right-to-work law, employees have the right to opt out of unions and not pay dues. But under the new WSU faculty contract, that would not be possible for the next eight years; it would be continue to remain as what is known as a "closed shop".
