Steward Health Care System and Service Employees International Union Sign Deal

The deal with 5,000 employees represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 1199, maintains health benefits and gives a 5.5% raise over three years. Steward Health Care System and the union representing about 5,000 of its hospital workers signed a new labor contract that maintains health benefits and gives employees a 5.5% raise over three years. The agreement sets a $15 per hour minimum wage what many consider a "living wage" for workers at five Steward hospitals by November 2018. Several other hospitals also have moved to a $15 starting wage.

Steward Health Care and 1199SEIU Reach Tentative Contract

Steward Health Care and 1199SEIU have reached a tentative contract that will give 170 workers at Nashoba Valley Medical Center a pay increase and improved benefits. The agreement will include a 3% pay increase, more predictable scheduling, improved overtime and vacation pay, more affordable health insurance and other benefits. The contract will take effect upon ratification by the rank and file, who are scheduled to vote on it next week. The Nashoba Valley workers represented by 1199SEIU include medical assistants, receptionists, clerical staff and facility technicians. They joined the union, a local of the 2.1 million-member Service Employees International Union, in January. The agreement also gives the workers, who joined the union in January access to college tuition and training benefits through the 1199SEIU Training & Upgrading Fund. Nashoba Valley workers will join workers from across the Steward system to renegotiate a system wide contract and a series of hospital specific agreements next year.

Steward Health Care appointed John Polanowicz as a Executive Vice President of Network, Insurance and Physician Operations. Polanowicz is no stranger to the Steward system. He previously served as president of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, which is part of Steward. He served in that role from 2013 to 2015. Prior to his work with the state, he worked for Steward St. Elizabeth's Medical Center from 2011 to 2013. Polanowicz also has served as president and CEO of Marlborough Hospital and vice president of operations at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
