University of New Mexico Officials Cuts 44 Vacant Jobs to Help Offset Shortfall
Feb 12 16
University of New Mexico officials announced that they have eliminated 44 open staff positions, resulting in $1.7 million in savings that will help offset a projected $3.3 million tuition shortfall. The culling of vacant positions is part of the effort to make ends meet as it continues to lose state funding and tuition revenues. Kevin Stevenson, who sat on a committee that reviewed these positions, said members found they could cut 44 open staff positions for a total of $1.7 million in immediate savings. Overall, the regents said they eliminated 257 open positions, but only 44 of those were budgeted for the 2016. Although the cuts involved only vacant positions, they weren't well received by everyone. The remaining $1.6 million projected shortfall will be covered by individual departments, which will have discretion to cut how they see fit.
