Larry Williams, who resigned as Marquette University athletic director in December 2013 after less than two years on the job, has been named athletic director of the University of Akron in Ohio. Williams' appointment is effective September 1, 2015 pending approval by the university's board of trustees. He replaces Tom Wistrcill, who returned to the Learfield Sports' university partnership group as senior vice president. After leaving Marquette, Williams worked for Equity Management Inc. Prior to Williams' Marquette post, he was director of athletics and recreation at the University of Portland (Ore.) for seven years.
University of Akron to Cut 213 Jobs

University of Akron rescinded a fee imposed on upper-level courses and agreed to abolish 213 positions, but would not take questions from about two dozen concerned faculty, staff and students. The moves to reduce jobs and eliminate a $60 million shortfall over the next three years were difficult but necessary to maintain a strong institution. Of the 213 positions to be eliminated, 161 are filled.

The University of Akron has selected Nathan J. Mortimer to serve as its interim director of athletics. Mortimer assumes the position after the resignation of Tom Wistrcill, who left for Learfield Sports. Mortimer is the school's vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer. After Wistrcill's resignation, UA President Scott Scarborough announced that there would be a nationwide search to find a replacement.
