The University of Akron has selected Nathan J. Mortimer to serve as its interim director of athletics. Mortimer assumes the position after the resignation of Tom Wistrcill, who left for Learfield Sports. Mortimer is the school's vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer. After Wistrcill's resignation, UA President Scott Scarborough announced that there would be a nationwide search to find a replacement.

The University of Akron will lay off employees, not fill open positions and will evaluate academic programs and staffing levels as it grapples with a decline in enrollment. Trustees agreed to $12 million in cuts, including layoffs of 18 staff and the nonrenewal of nine contract professionals and one faculty member. The university eliminated about 150 positions almost all by retirements, resignations and not filling existing vacancies. But officials acknowledge that about a third of what was reduced for the now $364.5 million budget are one-time savings, including not filling current openings.

University of Akron announced that its President Luis Proenza will step down on June 30, 2014. He oversaw increases in enrollment, student success and fundraising. Proenza will take a year’s sabbatical, then return to the university as a full-time faculty member.
