Anika Therapeutics, Inc. Announces Strategic Collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Amherst

Anika Therapeutics Inc. announced an agreement with the Institute for Applied Life Sciences at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst to collaborate on research to develop a therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which manifests itself in multiple joints of the body. The inflammatory process primarily affects the lining of the joints (synovial membrane), but can also affect other organs. The inflamed synovium leads to erosion of cartilage and bone, which can lead to joint deformity. RA imposes enormous physical and economic burdens on affected individuals, as well as society at-large. As the population in the U.S. continues to age, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 67 million individuals will be diagnosed with RA by the year 2030.

Victor Woolridge Names as New Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the University of Massachusetts Replacing Robert Caret

Victor Woolridge, vice president of Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers, has been named the new chairman of the board of trustees for the University of Massachusetts. With the announcement in December that current UMass President Robert Caret will resign in June to become chancellor of the University of Maryland system, Woolridge's first task will be to form a search committee and begin the process of replacing Caret. Woolridge will succeed current Chairman Henry Thomas III, who has submitted his resignation and will continue as a member of the UMass board. Former Gov. Deval Patrick appointed Thomas to the UMass Board in 2007 and made him board chairman in 2012. Since 2011, Woolridge, an alumnus of UMass Amherst, has chaired the UMass board's committee on administration and finance. And before he joined Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers, Woolridge spent a decade as the managing director of Babson Capital Management. Woolridge's current appointment to the UMass Board is set to expire in 2019.
