Intermountain Health Care Announces Results from Atrial Fibrillation Study

Intermountain Healthcare, Inc. has announced results from a new study of more than 10,000 patients treated long term with the blood thinner, Warfarin, reveals higher rates of dementia for patients with atrial fibrillation versus patients without the common heart rhythm disorder. The study found that patients with atrial fibrillation who were treated long term with Warfarin had higher rates of dementia, Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia compared to anticoagulated non-atrial fibrillation patients. The study was conducted through the Intermountain Healthcare Clinical Pharmacist Anticoagulation Service, which is part of the Intermountain Healthcare system based in Salt Lake City. Researchers enrolled a total of 10,537 patients with no history of dementia prior to the study.

The Board of Trustees of Intermountain Healthcare has selected Dr. A. Marc Harrison, 52, as the new president and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare when Dr. Charles W. Sorenson, 64, retires on October 15, 2016. Dr. Harrison has had a distinguished career in pediatric critical care, and most recently held positions as chief of International Business Development for Cleveland Clinic, headquartered in Ohio, and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Earlier roles included serving as chief medical operations officer for Cleveland Clinic, where he was responsible for a broad range of clinical operations worldwide, and as chairman of Pediatric Critical Care. Dr. Harrison will assume the helm when Dr. Sorenson retires as president and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare on October 15, 2016. Dr. Sorenson will continue with Intermountain as founding director of the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute, which is expected to open in 2018.
