Sunquest Information Systems and Partners HealthCare Announce Strategic Alliance

Sunquest Information Systems and Partners HealthCare are establishing a strategic alliance to accelerate genomic-based medicine. The relationship involves a strategic investment by Sunquest into GeneInsight, Inc. that streamlines the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of complex genetic test results. Partners is a majority shareholder in GeneInsight. In addition to the investment, Sunquest and GeneInsight will collaborate on providing seamless genetic testing workflow capabilities to clinical geneticists and pathologists. Sunquest and Partners have a shared vision for clinical genomics, with the goal of developing a next generation genomic information system and knowledgebase that will speed the advent of precision medicine.

Partners HealthCare To Reportedly Consider Acquisition Of Emerson Hospital

Partners HealthCare System, Inc. may consider acquiring Emerson Hospital, Inc., reported Boston Business Journal. The daily said, "The next hospital on Partners’ wish list? That’s most likely going to be Emerson Hospital in Concord, one of the last independent community hospitals up for grabs in Eastern Massachusetts." Partners agreed to a series of limits on how it does business as part of an antitrust deal with Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office. The details of the "agreement in principle" were disclosed. Among the restrictions to be imposed on Partners: If Partners execs want to merge with any other hospital that's essentially east of the Quabbin Reservoir within the next seven years, they’ll need the AG’s permission to do so. But there’s one exception, one that was presumably put on the table at Partners' request: Emerson Hospital has been deliberately excluded from this merger restriction, allowing Partners to acquire Emerson at some point without needing the AG's blessing. Many antitrust agreements require some kind of divestiture before a deal goes through. But in this case, the agreement actually helps open the door to give Partners an even larger presence in the suburbs. Officials at Emerson and Partners were cagey to Buisiness Journal when asked if there were any merger talks being considered or under way involving the two organizations. Gary Gottlieb, Chief Executive Officer of Partners HealthCare said, "We have a wonderful relationship with them. This agreement essentially would still provide for us to have to go through the usual regulatory approaches if we want to make the relationship any closer." A spokeswoman for Emerson declined to put an executive on the phone with me to talk about the Partners agreement.
