University Of Alabama Key Developments

TDK Corp. and The University of Alabama Sign Research Agreement Related to Green Energy, Electronics

TDK Corp. and The University of Alabama have signed a two-pronged research agreement to address challenges associated with the growing electric-energy movement and the miniaturization of electronic components. The newly signed agreement between TDK and UA's Center for Materials for Information Technology, or MINT, will, among other things, bring TDK engineers to campus while researching long-term solutions to some of the biggest challenges faced by the industry. A portion of this collaboration between TDK and UA researchers seeks an alternative to high-potential magnetic materials, known as rare-earth materials, central to sustaining the electric energy movement. Combining the know-how of TDK with that of its MINT researchers creates an intellectual powerhouse to tackle these significant challenges. The agreement between TDK and UA is called the MINT-TDK Collaborative Project. It builds on existing collaborations between these two entities and others led by Dr. Takao Suzuki, director of UA's MINT Center. The new effort, which formally begins September 1, has two components, rare-earth free permanent magnets and soft magnet metal for high-frequency applications. Rare-earth materials make the most powerful and efficient magnets, and their size and reliability are well suited for electric motors that use their magnetic field as power. However, an estimated 95% of the world's supply of rare earth materials is produced in China.

University of Alabama Announces Executive Changes

Stuart Bell has been named the next president of the University of Alabama. His appointment will be effective July 15, 2015. Bell, 58, has served as the executive vice president and provost at Louisiana State University since 2012. Bell will replace Judy Bonner, who announced in December that her responsibilities as president would end Sept. 30, 2015. Bell is no stranger to the Capstone. He previously served 16 years at the University of Alabama, starting in 1986 as an assistant professor in UA's department of mechanical engineering. Bell was named department head nine years later, where he served until accepting the a deanship at Kansas University in 2002.

Southern Research Institute and UAB Partner to Develop Life-Changing Medical Devices

Southern Research Institute and the University of Alabama at Birmingham have partnered to develop new medical devices to improve healthcare in the U.S. and around the globe. A medical device is any medical instrument, as opposed to a drug, that is used to diagnose, prevent or treat a disease or medical condition. New diagnostic imaging, surgical tools and therapeutic implants are examples of what the U.S. Food & Drug Administration defines as medical devices. The strategic partnership, which is called the Alliance for Innovative Medical Technology (AIMTech), combines the research and discovery expertise of Southern Research Institute scientists and engineers and UAB biomedical engineers and clinicians.
