Marquette University Key Developments

Marquette University Announces Executive Changes Effective August 1, 2016

Marquette University President Michael R. Lovell made two key executive personnel announcements, decisions he said are vital to moving the university forward and executing its strategic plan. Rev. Gerald Thomas (Tom) Krettek, S.J., director of the Master of Arts in Philosophical Resources program at Fordham University, has been named Marquette University's next vice president for mission and ministry, Lovell announced. Father Krettek, who will begin in his new role on August 1, 2016 was also the provincial superior for the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus from 2005 to 2011. Prior to his service as provincial superior, Father Krettek was an associate professor of philosophy in Marquette's Klingler College of Arts and Sciences from 2000 to 2005. While at Marquette, he was also the rector of the Marquette Jesuit Community. Previously, he was an assistant and then associate professor of philosophy at Creighton University from 1989 to 2000, and director of the Jesuit Humanities Program from 1989 to 1997. Father Krettek succeeds Stephanie Russell, who left Marquette in late 2015 to become the vice president for mission integration at the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Lora Strigens, associate vice president for finance and university architect, has been named vice president for planning and strategy, Lovell announced. The move, effective August 1, 2016 signals the heightened importance the university has placed on its strategic plan Strigens will coordinate its implementation.

Marquette University Announces Executive Changes, Effective July 1, 2016

Marquette University has named Xavier Cole as its new vice president for student affairs. Cole, who will begin his new role July 1, 2016, previously was vice president for student affairs at Washington College in Chesterton, Md., where he oversaw all aspects of student life since 2014. Prior to that, he served in a variety of student affair roles, most recently assistant vice president for student development, at Loyola University Maryland for 18 years. Cole succeeds Christopher Miller, who left his post last spring to pursue other business opportunities outside of higher education within the health care industry.

Marquette University Confirms Purchase of Ramada Milwaukee Downtown's Michigan Street Property

Marquette University confirmed it purchased the Ramada Milwaukee Downtown's Michigan Street property, but did not detail its plans for the land. Meanwhile, the Ramada will remain open for the foreseeable future. Public records showed a limited liability company with ties to Marquette had purchased the property at 633 W. Michigan St. for $3.8 million. The Ramada sits on that property, but Marquette only purchased the land - not the hotel that sits on it - subject to a lease with the hotel operator. The Ramada is part of the Wyndham Hotel Group, but its downtown Milwaukee location is individually owned and operated. Buying the 1.8-acre parcel adds to a more than $15 million portfolio of newly purchased properties, as Marquette extends its footprint south and east. Much of that property will go toward a proposed athletic research facility.
