Marquette University Confirms Purchase of Ramada Milwaukee Downtown's Michigan Street Property
Jul 9 15
Marquette University confirmed it purchased the Ramada Milwaukee Downtown's Michigan Street property, but did not detail its plans for the land. Meanwhile, the Ramada will remain open for the foreseeable future. Public records showed a limited liability company with ties to Marquette had purchased the property at 633 W. Michigan St. for $3.8 million. The Ramada sits on that property, but Marquette only purchased the land - not the hotel that sits on it - subject to a lease with the hotel operator. The Ramada is part of the Wyndham Hotel Group, but its downtown Milwaukee location is individually owned and operated. Buying the 1.8-acre parcel adds to a more than $15 million portfolio of newly purchased properties, as Marquette extends its footprint south and east. Much of that property will go toward a proposed athletic research facility.

Marquette University and Milwaukee Bucks Announce New Partnership
Jan 30 15
Marquette University and the Milwaukee Bucks announced a new partnership that will include the construction of a multipurpose center that supports college and professional athletes as well as academic research and wellness initiatives. The new venture has a goal of doubling research funding over the next five years and a major gift to establish a mental health research center. The center will provide cutting-edge faculty and student research in sports performance, medicine, nutrition and rehabilitation. It is also expected to combine indoor playing fields for Marquette's lacrosse and soccer programs, as well as an indoor track. The facility also is expected to improve access to recreation and fitness facilities for all students. Marquette University hopes to build the facility on 7.5 acres in the 800 block of W. Michigan St. The university recently acquired the parcel. Funding will come through gifts, corporate partnerships and research grants. The Bucks said the facility will not be the team's training center and is not related to their efforts to build a downtown arena. The team leases space at the Cousins Center in St. Francis. The new training facility is still in the conceptual phase. Design of the facility will be on a six-month ‘fast track’, with construction taking an additional 18 to 24 months. Two buildings on the site will be demolished. Jeanne Hossenlopp will become president for research and Innovation.
