Marquette University Key Developments

Marquette University Appoints Daniel Myers as Associate Provost

Daniel J. Myers, vice president and associate provost for faculty affairs at the University of Notre Dame, has been appointed the next provost at Marquette University. Myers will begin his new role on July 1. In the Office of the Provost, Myers' work focused in part on faculty orientation and mentoring and the faculty promotion and tenure process. He oversaw the Office of Digital Learning and the external reviews of academic departments, and chaired the University's recent reaccreditation process. Myers was also responsible for academic space management, which included participation in the planning and approval of all academic building and renovation projects, including the academic components of Campus Crossroads.

Marquette University and Milwaukee Bucks Announce New Partnership

Marquette University and the Milwaukee Bucks announced a new partnership that will include the construction of a multipurpose center that supports college and professional athletes as well as academic research and wellness initiatives. The new venture has a goal of doubling research funding over the next five years and a major gift to establish a mental health research center. The center will provide cutting-edge faculty and student research in sports performance, medicine, nutrition and rehabilitation. It is also expected to combine indoor playing fields for Marquette's lacrosse and soccer programs, as well as an indoor track. The facility also is expected to improve access to recreation and fitness facilities for all students. Marquette University hopes to build the facility on 7.5 acres in the 800 block of W. Michigan St. The university recently acquired the parcel. Funding will come through gifts, corporate partnerships and research grants. The Bucks said the facility will not be the team's training center and is not related to their efforts to build a downtown arena. The team leases space at the Cousins Center in St. Francis. The new training facility is still in the conceptual phase. Design of the facility will be on a six-month ‘fast track’, with construction taking an additional 18 to 24 months. Two buildings on the site will be demolished. Jeanne Hossenlopp will become president for research and Innovation.

Marquette University Announces Expansion

Marquette University announced that Marquette had purchased about 7 acres in the 800 block of W. Michigan St., and called the deal that expands the school's footprint to the east, a "once in a lifetime opportunity" for Marquette and Milwaukee. Marquette will move in- to the sixth floor of the $22 million Global Water Center in the Fifth Ward, joining other universities and water-related companies at the research facility. Opened in September 2013, the center is where water-related academic research and industry research and development can come together. UWM occupies an entire floor of the building. Lovell said Marquette is exploring options for a presence at the Innovation Campus in Wauwatosa, the public-private research park he championed while at UWM. Marquette will also launch a joint bioengineering department with the Medical College of Wisconsin.
