Angela DeBose Files Federal Employment Discrimination and Retaliation Lawsuit Against University of South Florida and Several Administrators
Dec 9 15
The former registrar of the University of South Florida has formally filed a federal employment discrimination and retaliation lawsuit against the institution and several administrators alleging that they 'conspired together in a scheme to defame, discredit and terminate' her. In 60-page complaint against USF, its board of trustees and a software company, Angela DeBose detailed the events leading up to a May 19 meeting where she was told that she was being 'separated' from her employment and eventually terminated on Aug. 19. She singled out several USF officials, including the Provost Ralph Wilcox, who she alleges caused a subsequent job offer to be withdrawn. The lawsuit was filed with the district court for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division. USF said, the university has not been served with Ms. DeBose's latest lawsuit, and therefore has not had an opportunity to file a response with the court. As a matter of practice, the university does not intend to comment on this ongoing litigation other than to state that the claims are without merit'. In the 20-count lawsuit, DeBose also is charging USF with tortious interference with a business relationship for allegedly giving her a poor reference. When DeBose got a job offer involving predictive analytics from the University of North Florida, she alleges that UNF contacted USF. In a May 26 phone call, Wilcox allegedly called his counterpart at UNF 'to interfere with and discourage DeBose's hire'. The following day, DeBose's offer of employment was rescinded, the lawsuit states. Besides the discrimination claim, DeBose is pursuing claims of defamation, libel, retaliation, conspiracy to interfere with civil rights, negligent hiring and supervision of one administrator, negligence, breach of contract, and fraud, among others. DeBose said USF breached both her annual employment agreement and a verbal agreement to extend her employment through 2019.
