Larry Conners Sues KMOV-TV

Former Channel 4 anchorman Larry Conners has sued KMOV-TV and its general manager, asking that the court void a "non-compete agreement" in his contract so that he may seek employment with another broadcaster in St. Louis. In the lawsuit, filed June 7, 2013 in St. Louis County Circuit Court, Conners claims that his dismissal May 23 violated the terms of his contract. The contract, which began April 15, stipulates that Conners cannot be fired without cause until after Feb. 14, 2014, according to the lawsuit. Attorney Merle Silverstein wrote in the suit that KMOV terminated Conners without cause, and plainly in violation of the terms of the contract.Conners was fired last month following his assertion May 13 on his Facebook page that there was a connection between increased scrutiny of his finances by the Internal Revenue Service and his April 2012 interview with President Barack Obama. On May 14 Conners made an on-air statement that his issues with the IRS preceded that interview by several years. Conners also filed a formal discrimination complaint May 24 against KMOV, saying that because he complained that he was paid less than former co-anchor Vickie Newton, the station changed his anchoring time slots and would not allow him to cover major breaking news stories.
