Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute named Dr. Lee A. McElroy, Jr. as interim director of athletics. The appointment is effective March 1, 2015. In this capacity, Dr. McElroy will assume responsibility for overseeing the Institute's 12 men's and 11 women's NCAA intercollegiate teams (21 Division III, 2 Division I), involving more than 550 student-athletes, as well as intramurals. For the past 14 years, Dr. McElroy served as Vice President and Director of Athletics at the University of Albany. Dr. McElroy succeeds Mr. Jim Knowlton, who has served as Rensselaer athletic director since 2008.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced that Nanobiotechnology expert Ravi Kane, the P.K. Lashmet Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been named head of the university's Howard P. Isermann Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE). He joined the Rensselaer faculty in 2001, following a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. He was promoted to associate professor in 2006, full professor in 2007, and named the P.K. Lashmet Professor in 2008.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced that Linda Schadler, the Russell Sage Professor and associate dean for academic affairs for the School of Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been named vice provost and dean for undergraduate education. The appointment is effective from Oct. 13, 2014. In this position, Schadler will be responsible for overseeing the Institute's undergraduate degree programs. Along with enhancing the core curriculum and growing opportunities for undergraduate research and international experiences, Schadler will strengthen Institute programs focused on student advising, retention, graduation, and other student support services. She also will play an important role in the implementation of Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students (CLASS), which provides support and co-curricular opportunities for Rensselaer students throughout their undergraduate years. Additionally, Schadler will continue to advance Institute-wide initiatives in teaching and learning, such as the Mandarin Project and Art Across the Curriculum. She currently serves as a member of ASM International's Board of Trustees.
