IBM and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Partner to Launch New Center for Health Empowerment by Analytics, Learning, and Semantics

International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have announced the creation of the new center for Health Empowerment by Analytics, Learning, and Semantics (HEALS). Located on the Rensselaer campus, the HEALS center is a five-year collaborative research effort aimed at researching how the application of advanced cognitive computing capabilities can help people to understand and improve their own health conditions. The new center's vision is to advance the understanding of chronic disease prevention through data-driven discovery and analysis of factors that can help predict the propensity to develop chronic conditions and provide personalized health recommendations and lifestyle guidance for clinicians to deliver to their patients. Specifically, the center plans to develop cognitive tools for health empowerment that use analytics, knowledge-driven learning, and semantics-based interrogation to address data-to-knowledge gaps to enable clinicians and patients to help manage and prevent of chronic diseases and conditions."We now have powerful computational and experimental tools that drive personalized health risk predictions.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Announces New Leadership for Board of Trustees, Effective January 1, 2017

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced that Arthur F. Golden, 66, has been elected chair of the Rensselaer Board of Trustees, Wanda Denson-Low, 78, has been elected vice-chair, and Curtis R. Priem, 82, has been elected secretary, effective January 1, 2017. Golden will succeed the Honorable Arthur J. Gajarsa, 62, as chair of the board. Golden joined the Rensselaer Board of Trustees in 2005 and has served on the Executive Committee, Investment Committee, and Audit Committee. He also served as chair of the Student Life Committee. Golden is global co-chairman of Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP's mergers and acquisitions practice, the senior Davis Polk partner, and for nine years was a member of the firm's Management Committee. He is also the senior independent member of the board of directors of Emerson Electric.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Announces Executive Changes

Michael Ginsberg has been named interim general counsel at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Ginsberg is managing partner at Pattison, Sampson, Ginsberg & Griffin P.C. He replaces Charles Carletta, who was also from Pattison, Sampson, Ginsberg & Griffin P.C. and is retiring. As general counsel, Ginsberg oversees all legal aspects at the university. Those legal matters include governmental compliance, Title IX compliance, litigation, IP protection, risk management issues, real estate issues and governmental relations. Ginsberg will remain as managing partner at the law firm during his time as interim general counsel.
