TRW unveiled a new version of its small pyrotechnic inflator with reduced size and weight at the Airbag 2014 exhibition, which was held in Germany on December 13, 2014. The new lightweight roof rail airbag is designed for micro- through mid-sized vehicles in China and Europe TRW will begin production of the inflator in early 2015 in Laage, Germany; Xi'an, China; and Mesa, Arizona, United States. The company has already signed six development contracts for the SPI2 EVO with five carmakers. Additionally, TRW showcased a roof-mounted rear airbag concept at Airbag 2014 that, when used in combination with a seat belt equipped with a retractor pretensioner and single constant load limiter, reduces the likelihood of rear-seat-occupant head contact with the front seat. The company also showcased a front-seat-mounted rear airbag concept, which is an advanced design with the unit placed on the rear-facing side of front seats to help protect rear-seat occupants. The company expects to start production of both the roof-mounted rear airbag and the front-seat-mounted rear airbag in late 2017.
