In September 1998, Cross-Continent Auto entered into an agreement and plan of merger with Republic Industries Inc. (RI), pursuant to which RI/BG Merger Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of RI, would merge with and into Cross-Continent Auto, with Cross-Continent Auto surviving as a wholly owned subsidiary of RI. Cross-Continent Auto operated retail automotive dealerships, as of September 30, 1998. Its products and services included new and used vehicles, repair and maintenance services, replacement parts, and financing and credit insurance.
