The Providence Journal Company Announces Executive Changes

Howard G. Sutton, publisher, president and chief executive officer of The Providence Journal, will retire in September after a 41-year career at the news organization. His retirement comes as New Media Investment Group Inc. (New Media) completes its $46-million purchase of the paper from A. H. Belo Corporation. Sutton will serve as a consultant to New Media through the end of the year. Bernie Szachara, senior vice president for publishing and group publisher at Local Media Group will succeed Sutton as interim publisher. A national search for a permanent publisher will take place in 2015.

A. H. Belo Corporation (NYSE:AHC) is seeking acquisitions. A. H. Belo said that a sale of The Providence Journal Company would generate additional cash proceeds to potentially invest in or buy advertising and marketing services companies.

The Providence Journal Company Announces Management Changes

The Providence Journal Company has a new top editor. Karen A. Bordeleau will succeed Thomas E. Heslin as executive editor and senior vice president after Heslin steps down later this month following an extended medical leave. Bordeleau served previously as deputy executive editor and, since June, as acting executive editor. Her appointment is effective April 29, 2013. Heslin is retiring after 41 years in journalism, 32 of them at The Journal.
