Government Mulls Sale Of Unused Land Of Pharma Psus

Government is looking at raising a record approximately INR 700 billion from disinvestment of its shareholding in state-owned firms and the sale of their unutilised land. The companies are Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Hindustan Antibiotics Limited and Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited (BSE:500449). Pharma PSUs are sitting on huge land bank. They have prime properties in various cities as well as metros. These assets can be encashed," said a senior government official.

Government Halts Land Sale of Hindustan Antibiotics

BJP-led Narendra Modi government has halted Hindustan Antibiotics Limited's (HA) plan to sell vacant land in its possession to raise working capital and pay off some of its dues. In a letter received by Hindustan Antibiotics, Pimpri, recently, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers said the firm should not sell the land as the government will make budgetary provisions for its rehabilitation. For the past two-three years, HA has been trying to sell at least 6 acre of vacant land in Pimpri. The company had invited tenders as it was not getting the right price for the land. However, Maharashtra Housing And Area Development Authority had declared its intention to buy the land at INR 170 million per acre and the deal was about to be finalized when the Lok Sabha elections were announced. "During the UPA regime, we were allowed to sell the land. However, with the Modi government at the helm, the sale has been stopped," said HA officials." HA Personnel Manager, T Das confirmed that the Centre has stopped the sale of land. "We were about to finalize the deal just when the government directive asking to stop the deal landed. Everything has come to a standstill," he said.
