3 UK to Invest GBP 4.8 Million in Hull LTE Upgrade

3 UK has announced a GBP 4.8 million investment in a two-year upgrade project in Hull, where over two-thirds of its sites will be upgraded to LTE by the end of 2015 and the remainder in 2016. The investment also includes an upgrade to the fibre backhaul network connecting the operator's cell sites, with CityFibre already having started to roll out cable in the city. The backhaul upgrade project is expected to take up to 12 months to complete.

3 UK reported earnings results for the first half ended June 2014. The company posted a 3% decline in first-half revenues to £974 million, but profits grew as customers used an increasing amount of mobile data. The company reported operating profit of £123 million, a significant increase on the £86 million it generated in the same period last year and up slightly on the £121 million it reported in the second half of 2013. Growth in customer numbers and in mobile data usage drove that profit increase. The EBITDA for the period amounted to £232 million growing 23% year-on-year and leading to an improvement of 4 percentage points in EBITDA margin to 32%. Capex for the first six months amounted to £116 million compared with £87 million in the first six months of 2013.
