The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC Key Developments

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC Announces the Opening of its Green Energy Facility in Freetown, Mass

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC announced the opening of its Green Energy Facility in Freetown, Mass. on April 15, just in time for Earth Day. The innovative facility will convert inedible food from its Stop & Shop New England stores into energy that will help power the company's distribution center in Freetown. The Stop & Shop Green Energy Facility is expected to process an average of 95 tons of inedible food per day, an estimated 34,000 tons per year. As the food breaks down, it produces gas that fuels a generator that, in turn, generates electricity. The energy produced by the 12,000-square-foot facility will provide up to 40% of the 1.1 million square-foot Freetown distribution center's energy needs, enough power to operate the facility for four months out of the year. Once fully operational, the Facility will create approximately 1.25 megawatts of clean electricity.

Stop & Shop's Stores May Sold As Part Of Merger

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC's stores in Wappingers Falls, Rhinebeck and New Paltz are rumored to be affected as part of the merger of its parent company. There are reports that three mid-Hudson Valley Stop & Shop locations could be up for sale. Chris Brand, external communications and public affairs lead for Ahold USA, Inc. said: "The merger is currently under review by the Federal Trade Commission and remains on track for completion in mid-2016. As part of any merger approval process where there may be store divestitures, store visits may be conducted by potential buyers but it's too early to speculate on the outcome of the FTC review process. We do not anticipate any store closures as part of the FTC review process."

Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. to Open Third Wave Stores in NYC, NJ

Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. announced its third wave of store openings as it converts 25 grocery stores it acquired from the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. The locations Stop & Shop acquired include nine Long Island stores. The third wave of grand openings is planned for Oct. 30, and includes the Waldbaum's in Huntington, along with locations in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Howard Beach and Flushing, Queens, as well as Kinnelon, New Jersey. The stores closed on October 22, 2015 for renovations.
