Kenworth Truck Company, Inc. Key Developments

Kenworth Introduces Advanced Charge Start System

Kenworth announced advanced technology for enhanced protection against battery drainage. The system provides a dedicated engine start module and an inverter for increased performance. Kenworth also is announcing availability of a new inverter/charger option for easier battery recharging while parked. Also new is an automatic battery monitoring and engine startup for the Kenworth Idle Management System. Kenworth now offers the ultracapacitor-based Engine Start Module (ESM) as a factory-installed option for new Kenworth T680s and T880s. The engine start module provides dedicated power to start the truck. That frees the truck's standard batteries to focus on powering accessory devices such as a laptop, microwave, refrigerator and television electronics in addition to the truck's electronics and lights. The ESM is designed to start an engine in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 149 degrees Fahrenheit, even when the batteries have low voltage. The ESM is among several advanced technology components introduced at the 2015 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky.

Kenworth Launches KENWORTH TruckTech+ and KENWORTH NAV+ HD

Kenworth announced two new technology products to improve vehicle diagnostics and productivity on the road – KENWORTH TruckTech+ and KENWORTH NAV+ HD. KENWORTH TruckTech+ will be available for new Kenworth Class 8 trucks specified with the PACCAR MX-13 engine starting this summer. Kenworth customers will benefit from real-time vehicle health monitoring technology provided by PeopleNet, the telematics provider for the Kenworth system. The system will allow the PACCAR MX-13 engine to “talk” with the fleet manager, Kenworth call center and Kenworth dealer to optimize truck uptime and productivity. KENWORTH TruckTech+ saves time by providing clear information to the driver and fleet manager on the proper next steps. Fault codes and engine performance data are sent via the truck’s standard modem to Kenworth’s analytics center, where possible root causes are diagnosed and solutions are recommended via email notification. Notifications may include keep driving, no action required; keep driving and have the fault addressed during the next service interval; head to a dealer for service; or pull over to prevent damage. If the customer needs to take the truck in for service, the system maps out the locations of the three closest repair facilities. In addition, the data is sent to a secure web portal where the fleet manager can review the truck’s location, status, identified issue and recommended solution. KENWORTH NAV+ HD is a next-generation, multi-function communication and entertainment system that is standard for new Kenworth Class 8 trucks ordered with Kenworth’s premium interior package, and available as an option for all new Kenworth Class 6-8 conventional trucks. It’s designed with numerous options aimed at providing solutions to every day needs. KENWORTH NAV+ HD features a 7-inch high-definition touch screen, plus integration into the Kenworth SmartWheel steering wheel. The system offers hands-free Bluetooth phone capability, truck navigation through Co-Pilot, iPod and MP3 integration, integrated SiriusXM satellite radio, virtual gauges, camera inputs and a host of other features. In addition, it offers WiFi capability.

Kenworth Launches 76-Inch Mid-Roof Sleeper

Kenworth announced the introduction of a new 76-inch mid-roof sleeper for the Kenworth T680 and T880 at the Mid-America Trucking Show. Full production is expected to start in the fall. The Kenworth 76-inch mid-roof sleeper is optimized for liquid bulk tankers, flatbed haulers and other operators looking for a lighter weight, more aerodynamic truck with all the driver comforts of a full-height sleeper. The mid-roof sleeper provides 100-pound weight savings when compared to Kenworth’s 76-inch high-roof sleeper and up to a 5% fuel economy savings for tanker and flatbed applications, depending on load conditions. As far as driver comfort, Kenworth’s 76-inch mid-roof sleeper provides drivers with 6-1/2 feet of headroom to offer taller drivers greater ease of movement and gives all drivers a spacious work environment. The 76-inch mid-roof sleeper features a liftable lower bunk and side storage towers, including hanging storage for drivers to store their clothes. Also available is an optional upper bunk for team drivers or a back wall sleeper storage unit. Available as a factory-installed option is the Kenworth Idle Management System. The battery-based auxiliary power unit system for air conditioning is integrated directly into the ducting system. Combined with an insulation package for the cab and sleeper, the system provides continuous AC performance in typical off-hour downtime. The sleeper offers a premium sound system installed at the factory, or a mount for the customer to install a flat screen TV for even more driver enjoyment. With the new addition, the Kenworth T680 family’s configurations will include the 76-inch mid- and high-roof sleepers, 52-inch mid-roof sleeper, and day cab. The Kenworth T880 family will include day cab, 52-inch sleeper and 76-inch mid-roof sleeper configurations.
