MontaVista Software, LLC Key Developments

Montavista Software, LLC Announces General Availability of Montavista Carrier Grade Express (CGX) 2.0

MontaVista Software, LLC announced the general availability (GA) of MontaVista Carrier Grade eXpress (CGX) 2.0. MontaVista® CGX 2.0 enables development across a wide array of intelligent device markets, from traditional networking and communication to Network Function Virtualization (NFV), general embedded and industrial control to Internet of Things (IoT). As a fully integrated, pre-tested environment, CGX offers a truly robust out of box experience for development teams. MontaVista plans to follow a rapid release cadence to better align with latest Yocto® releases for the CGX product family, enabling adoption of newer Long Term Support (LTS) Kernels, tool-chains, and emerging market technologies on a yearly basis. CGX 2.0 incorporates Yocto 2.0, the LTS 4.1 Linux kernel, and GCC 5.2 initially supporting ARM (v7/v8) and x86 (32/64) SoCs (with MIPS and PowerPC on roadmap). MontaVista CGX 2.0 is packaged to address embedded developer's requirements across various legacy and emerging markets. CGX 2.0 base platform (called CGX Foundation) is equipped with a core feature set needed to produce a high quality embedded product. Building on Foundation, CGX 2.0 introduces additional technology profiles for IoT, Virtualization, Security, Carrier Grade and Dataplane. These technology profiles offer integrated and tested features needed to quickly bring to market IoT Gateways, VNFs, and robust, high uptime telecom infrastructure equipment. MontaVista CGX includes new runtime components that integrate with MontaVista DevRocket, an Eclipse-based IDE with development tools that enhance productivity for both kernel level and application-level engineers. Integrated memory leak detection, performance profiling, memory usage analysis, and system tracing combine to accelerate system development and maintenance, and increase system availability.

Ericsson Selects Montavista Software to Develop Enhancements in MontaVista CGE7 to Make it an EAL4+ Certification Ready Platform

MontaVista Software, LLC announced that it has been selected by Ericsson to develop enhancements in MontaVista CGE7 to make it an EAL4+ certification ready platform. With datacenters rapidly standardizing on virtualization, enhanced security is critical to meet evolving challenges and standards for critical infrastructure. Common Criteria was established to give enterprise, government, and carrier markets assurance any certified security product is measured and verified against an internationally recognized set of guidelines. Adding technologies to enable CGE7 to be EAL4+ certification ready offers the embedded industry an Open Source distribution that is expansive in security features such as authentication, kernel crypto libraries, identification, security policy management, and function protection. MontaVista will leverage Security Technology Implementation Guideline (STIG) and Common Criteria Operation System Protection Profile (OSPP) for providing rapid security updates. In addition, Virtual Server and Trusted Platform Module Protection Profiles will be incorporated. Technologies such as Trusted Platform Module, Trustzone, Trusted Execution Environment along with SELinux, a standard feature in CGE7, are important enablers for EAL4+ certification.

MontaVista Software Delivers Open Source Platform Ideal for 5G Carrier Grade Telecom Infrastructure, NFV Applications and Embedded Internet of Things Devices

MontaVista Software, LLC announced MontaVista Carrier Grade eXpress (CGX), the next generation platform for embedded Internet of Things (IoT) devices, 5G carrier grade telecom infrastructure, and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solutions. MontaVista Linux CGX, delivers carrier grade Linux reliability, security, and serviceability that is highly configurable and flexible. CGX meets the demands of the interconnected intelligent devices, providing application portability, dynamic configuration, field maintenance, and real-time performance in a single platform. As a fully integrated, pre-tested environment, MontaVista CGX offers a robust out of box experience for development teams. Developers can now choose CGX to achieve rapid time to market while leveraging the flexibility of a true open source development platform. CGX will incorporate emerging standards at a yearly cadence, aligning with the latest Yocto revisions. MontaVista CGX is packaged as a base platform (CGX Foundation) equipped with a core feature set needed to produce a high quality embedded product. For market specific requirements, MontaVista will offer additional technology profiles such as Carrier Grade and Virtualization, adding in key features and functionality critical for solutions in these vertical markets. Application developers will benefit from the QEMU simulator, accelerating schedules by beginning development before real silicon platforms are available. Additionally, CGX will offer flexibility to choose multiple upgrade options, including Kernel live patching. This technique is particularly useful for applying small patches or security fixes on the Kernel without taking a product offline. It also greatly simplifies maintainability in conjunction with RPM based user-land upgrade, essential for IoT devices. In addition, MontaVista is introducing Docker® in CGX which allows user applications (Docker containers) to be updated one at a time in a layered fashion. An integrated hardware root of trust and package authentication ensures complete security through the upgrade process even in a very large scale deployment.
