Molecular Devices Launches No-Wash Potassium Ion Channel Assay Kit

Molecular Devices, at SLAS 2015, launched a homogeneous, no-wash assay to measure ligand- and voltage-gated potassium channel activity. The FLIPR Potassium Assay Kit uses a novel thallium-sensitive indicator dye and a masking agent to significantly widen the conventional assay window, enabling studies of channels with low conductance or low expression levels. The kit's protocol eliminates the customary wash steps that introduce artificial variation and limit high-throughput automation. Current thallium-based potassium ion channel assays require multiple buffer or media replacements, making them slow and cumbersome, and prone to well-to-well variation. Pervasive background noise also undermines accurate assessment of the small signals generated by many low-conductance channels or low-expressing cell lines. The FLIPR Potassium Assay Kit directly measures potassium channel function using a thallium-sensitive indicator dye that passively diffuses into cells as an acetoxymethyl ester. Cytoplasmic esterases cleave the dye into its fluorogenic form. A proprietary masking agent further reduces the background fluorescence and enhances the signal-to-noise ratio. In a comparison to a commercial potassium assay, this kit increased the assay window several fold for many cell types. The no-wash format simplifies automation using 96-, 384-, and 1536-well formats in FLIPR and FlexStation microplate readers.
Molecular Devices Launches Digidata® 1550A

Molecular Devices announced the launch of the Digidata® 1550A Low-Noise Data Acquisition System plus HumSilencer(TM) noise cancelling technology for the analog-to-digital conversion of biological signals measured in electrophysiology experiments. The Digidata 1550A is the digitizer with built-in adaptive noise cancellation technology, called the HumSilencer, which provides single-click elimination of the 50 and 60 Hz line-frequency noise that can severely impair analysis of biological signals. The Digidata 1550A HumSilencer technology rapidly identifies local line-frequency noise and suppresses extraneous noise amplitude up to 20V peak to peak at the analog input in less than one second.

Molecular Devices(R) at the Experimental Biology annual meeting in San Diego introduced the inexpensive and versatile EMax(R) Plus Microplate Reader and MultiWash(TM)+ Microplate Washer, which are designed for labs just starting up or looking to extend capabilities with affordable, yet reliable instrumentation that utilizes the industry-standard SoftMax(R) Pro Microplate Data Acquisition and Analysis Software. The EMax Plus Microplate Reader measures 96-well plates and comes with eight standard filter modes to cover the entire visible range, for applications such as protein quantification, cell viability, cell proliferation and ELISA. The reader includes multiple licenses to the SoftMax(R) Pro software for endpoint and kinetic analysis of microplate data, eliminating any need to retrain lab members or compromise data analysis routines when switching between inexpensive low-throughput and powerful higher-throughput plate readers. SoftMax Pro reduces setup time for common assays with more than 140 built-in protocols, which are complemented by a large collection of community-shared protocols and tools for FDA 21 CFR Part 11 regulatory compliance.
