US Airways Group Inc., Prior To Acquisition With America West Holdings Corp. Key Developments

US Airways Pilots Sue American Airlines and US Airways over Seniority in Merger

US Airways pilots has sued American Airlines, US Airways and the union representing American’s pilots over how pilot seniority should be determined after the carriers’ recent merger. The US Airline Pilots association filed its lawsuit in federal court. This is the second seniority dispute stemming from a merger involving US Airways’ pilots. Pilots could not agree on a combined seniority list following the 2005 merger with America West, leading to a bitter dispute and years of lawsuits that were not resolved. In the most recent lawsuit, USAPA said the parties could not agree on a process to determine the seniority integration of the two pilot groups and that the issue should be determined by a federal arbiter.

American Airlines Group and US Airways Expand Codeshare Agreement

American Airlines Group and US Airways have expanded their codeshare agreement to provide customers access to nearly 6,500 daily flights to more than 275 destinations in the combined global network. With this codeshare, the company's customers will be able to immediately realize some of the benefits they can come to expect from us, and it's exciting to deliver those benefits so early in the integration process. The two airlines expect to codeshare on every international flight in these markets by the end of the first quarter. Through the codeshare, each airline can sell tickets operated by the other carrier using its own code and flight number, and customers will be able to easily combine select flights operated by each airline on a single itinerary when booking travel on, or through travel distribution channels.

American's Flight Attendants Announces Settlement Antitrust Suit Against American Airlines and US Airways

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, representing 16,000 flight attendants at American Airlines, cheered the announcement that the Justice Department has accepted a settlement in its antitrust suit against American Airlines and US Airways. This is the culmination of well over a year of hard work. APFA recognized the value of the merger plan and executed a creative strategy to bring the deal to fruition. From the halls of Congress to the board rooms of Wall Street, American's flight attendants convinced every major stakeholder that their airline needed a merger partner in order to compete with the remaining legacy carriers Delta and United. This is the first time a merger has been completed in bankruptcy and it could not have occurred without the support of organized labor and the strong advocacy of the APFA.
