Lockheed Martin Commercial Engine Solutions Announces Laying Off About Third of its Workers at Port San Antonio
Sep 23 15
Lockheed Martin Commercial Engine Solutions is laying off about a third of its workers at Port San Antonio after failing to gain enough business in the commercial sector to make up for cutbacks in its mainstay military business. Lockheed is laying off 87 of the roughly 235 employees it has at the port, where it performs maintenance and repair work on aircraft engines. The layoff announcement comes less than a week after the port's CEO, Roland Mower, pledged to work with public officials and tenants to bring 5,000 jobs to the port by 2020. The port, which has about 12,000 employees, has lost about 2,000 jobs in recent years, largely due to cutbacks at the Department of Defense and the difficulty of some aerospace tenants landing commercial work orders. Last year, Boeing laid off hundreds of workers because of a decline in commercial airline work, and Lockheed laid off another three dozen.
