Reynolds Metals Company Key Developments

Group of Landowners in Louisiana File Lawsuit Against Alcoa Inc and Reynolds Metals

A group of landowners in Louisiana, USA have filed a lawsuit against Alcoa Inc. and Reynolds Metals Co alleging that emissions from a plant jointly owned by the companies have damaged and contaminated nearby properties. The landowners allege that particulate emissions from coke dust generated by the Lake Charles, Louisiana plant damaged nearby properties by collecting in "inordinate quantities" on homes and vehicles. The plaintiffs have requested that funds be awarded to complete a scientific investigation of the contamination, clean the affected properties and compensate for the "annoyance, discomfort and inconvenience" resulting from plant emissions. The petitioners in the case include 27 landowners who are seeking damages not to exceed $74,500 each. Alcoa has requested that the case be transferred to US District Court in Louisiana as the company and Reynolds Metals are not based in the state and the total amount of damages sought exceeds $75,000 per plaintiff after accounting for legal fees and other costs. The Lake Charles plant makes baked carbon anodes and calcined coke for use in smelting operations. The plant has an annual production capacity of 283,000 tonnes of calcined coke and 138,000 tonnes of carbon anodes.
