Fungal Research Centre of Excellence Opens at University of Aberdeen
Jan 30 17
The Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology was set up in Aberdeen. The new centre was opened on 26 January. The researchers at the MRC CMM will spearhead innovative research and training to generate knowledge that will improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of fungal diseases. It is the first MRC Centre dedicated to the field of medical mycology the first time that the University of Aberdeen has been awarded an MRC Centre status. There are only 22 MRC Centres in the UK. Despite the major medical impact of these fungal infections, medical mycology is a historically underfunded area of research, representing only a small percentage of both the UK and US governments' infectious disease budgets. The new MRC Centre for Medical Mycology represents a joint £6.5 million investment by both the MRC and the University of Aberdeen.
University of Aberdeen Appoints Martin Gilbert as Senior Governor
Jan 12 17
The University of Aberdeen announced the appointment of Martin Gilbert as Senior Governor to lead its governing body, the University Court. He co-founded Aberdeen Asset Management which has grown to be one of the leading fund management groups and has established a successful non-executive career within the public and private sectors. Martin was previously Chairman of FirstGroup, the FTSE250 listed transport services company, and has been Deputy Chairman of Sky plc since 2011. Alongside these commercial roles, Martin has undertaken non-executive roles within government at home and abroad and has recently become a Patron of the Aberdeen Law Project, a student-founded and operated not-for-profit project that uses student volunteers to widen access to the legal system. The Senior Governor is responsible for the leadership and effectiveness of the University Court as the governing body of the University, which approves the University's mission and strategic vision and oversees the management of its revenue, property and other resources. The appointment was approved by the University Court following an extensive public recruitment process in line with the Scottish Code of Good HE Governance. The appointment is for a 3 year term of office with effect from 1 January 2017. Martin succeeds Sir Moir Lockhead, who retired from the role at the end of December having made a valuable contribution to the life, work and governance of the University for 14 years.
Members of the University and College Union to Strike at Aberdeen University in a Dispute over Jobs
Dec 6 16
Members of the University and College Union will strike at Aberdeen University in a dispute over jobs. The workers will stage the walkout in protest at the treatment of staff at the institution's medical school. The union said four Asian members of staff at the university had been given the choice of redundancy or accepting new contracts on reduced terms, and questioned whether the process had been discriminatory. Members of UCU and students will hand over an 1,800-strong petition against the job losses to the university's governing body on December 6, 2016 before the walkout.
