IBM Research and Thiess Use Data 'Vital Signs' to Predict Mining Equipment Health and Drive Business Performance

IBM announced a new collaboration with Thiess to use Big Data to improve machine availability and operational productivity utilizing predictive analytics and modeling technologies. This initial collaboration focuses on Thiess' Mining haul trucks and excavators, and will help unify asset management and business operations. Unlike traditionally data-intensive industries such as banking or telecommunications, which rely on advanced information technology (IT) to drive operational performance, asset-intensive industries such as mining, have typically not invested as much operationally in IT systems. The IBM Research and Thiess collaboration has been integrating current and historical machine sensor data, along with maintenance and repair, operational, and environmental data to use as a basis for data-driven operational optimization.

PT Bumi Resources Tbk. Launches Legal Action Against PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia

PT Bumi Resources Tbk. has launched legal action against PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia, a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings Ltd., to question whether its contract with Thiess was valid under 2009 Indonesian mining law. The legal action was filed April 2 in the Queensland Supreme Court. Leighton halted operations in two mines majority-owned by Bumi Resources in South Kalimantan, Indonesia, due to the miner's failure to pay its net project receivables to Thiess. Bumi Resources, however, claimed it paid Thiess in full and said the mining suspension is 'wrong, breaks established precedent norms and harms the local economy'.
