Tribune Publishing Company announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire MLIM, LLC, owner of the San Diego Union-Tribune, as well as nine community weeklies and related digital properties in San Diego County. The purchase price is $85 million, which includes $73 million in cash and $12 million in Tribune Publishing common stock, plus the assumption of obligations for a single-employer pension plan. When the transaction closes, Austin Beutner will serve as Publisher & CEO of both the San DiegoUnion-Tribune and Los Angeles Times and as Publisher & CEO of the newly formed California News Group.

Austin Beutner, Publisher and CEO of the LA Times, announced Johanna Maska, former director of White House press advance for President Barack Obama, will join the company as Vice President of Marketing and Communications. She will lead efforts to further the connection between The Times and its readers, and broaden its reach in Los Angeles and around the world. Maska will report to Beutner and oversee all marketing and communications for the LA Times and its sister properties, including Hoy Los Angeles. She will work with Times’ editorial leadership and across all departments to increase levels of audience engagement, in particular online.

The Los Angeles Times announced that it has appointed Don Reis to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer reporting to Publisher and CEO Austin Beutner. Reis, an accomplished senior sales and management executive, will oversee sales and sponsorship efforts across all Los Angeles Times Media Group brands. He is the former VP of Multi-Media Sales for The Wall Street Journal where he oversaw their Advertising Sales Offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Asia.
