Tribune Still Seeks To Buy Register

The owner of the Los Angeles Times Communications, LLC, will still bid for the Press-Enterprise Company and Orange County Register Communications Inc., Tribune Publishing’s new Chief Executive, Justin Dearborn said. "the company still is actively working on a bid for the assets of Freedom Communications, Inc. which filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2016. Freedom’s two newspapers and related assets will be sold in a court-supervised auction this month. But Dearborn noted that there is a price where we would walk away from the Freedom bidding."

Rupert Murdoch, Co-chairman of News Corporation (NasdaqGS:NWSA), on November 27, 2015, said that he had strong word that the Tribune Publishing Company (NYSE:TPUB)'s newspaper group will be bought by a Wall Street firm, while the Los Angeles Times Communications, LLC will be split off and purchased by local investors including philanthropist Eli Broad. Rupert Murdoch did not say on his verified Twitter account which firm would acquire the newspaper group or the timing of any deal. Murdoch tweeted that he did not bid and had no interest. A Los Angeles Times representative referred questions to a Tribune Co spokesman, who could not immediately be reached for comment. A spokeswoman for Broad, who has previously expressed an interest in the Los Angeles Times, declined to comment.

Tribune Publishing Co. announced that Timothy E. Ryan, an accomplished media executive who has served as Publisher & CEO of The Baltimore Sun and The Morning Call, has been appointed as Publisher & CEO of the Los Angeles Times and The San Diego Union-Tribune. Ryan, who is relocating to Los Angeles, will also serve as CEO of the Company’s California News Group and will report to Tribune Publishing CEO Jack Griffin. Austin Beutner, who most recently held these positions, is departing the company effective immediately. Ryan was appointed Publisher & CEO of The Baltimore Sun in 2007 and assumed the additional duties of Publisher & CEO of The Morning Callin 2010.
