PT Petrokimia Gresik to Start Commercial Operation of Phosphoric Acid Plant in the Second Quarter of 2014

PT Petrokimia Gresik announced that it is on track to start commercial operation of its new 200,000 tone/year phosphoric acid plant in the second quarter of 2014. The plant, a 50:50 joint venture between PKG and Jordan Phosphate Mines called PT Petro Jordan Abadi Company, is located in Gresik, East Java, alongside PKG's current operations. With upgrades currently being carried out to the existing plant to double the capacity, total production levels will be at 600,000 tones. The new plant and upgrades to the existing facility will see PKG become near self-sufficient for phosphoric acid, with their consumption pegged at 600,000 tones to meet its annual output of 2.2m tones of compound fertilizer. Jordan Phosphate Mines is supplying the majority of the 770,000 tone/year requirement of phosphate rock to the plant. Around 200,000 tones of sulphur is also required, with this said to be sourced from the Middle East and also local Indonesian suppliers. The new plant and upgrades to the existing facilities will also see an additional 600,000 tones of sulphuric acid capacity per year, adding to its current sulphuric acid capacity of 570,000 tonnes. The company source said around 200,000 tones of sulphuric acid imports will be required for phosphoric acid production at the new plant. PKG has been actively buying in the spot market for sulphuric acid in recent months, following production issues with a local supplier.
