Compuware Corporation Key Developments
Compuware Corporation Releases Substantial Upgrade to Topaz
Jul 1 15
Compuware Corporation released a substantial upgrade to Topaz, an innovative development-and-operations suite that empowers customers to get maximum value from their IBM z Systems environments. Of primary importance to customers is the debut of Topaz for Java Performance, which delivers comprehensive visibility into the performance and behavior of Java Batch programs and WebSphere transactions running on the mainframe including peak CPU utilization of specific Java methods and classes; garbage collection issues such as memory leaks and excessively long collection intervals; and threads that are blocked or not actually doing useful work. By providing these capabilities, Topaz for Java Performance gives mainframe owners the confidence to more aggressively pursue the benefits of running Java on IBM z Systems, which include: Leveraging the wealth of existing Java programming expertise; Lower costs through the use of IBM's specialty processors; Easier connectivity of applications across platforms; Running Java application code on the scalable, reliable, secure and cost-efficient platform. The new release of Topaz delivers two additional capabilities that enhance customers' ability to get maximum value from their mainframe: Topaz for Program Analysis now gives developers intuitive, accurate visibility into the flow of data within their COBOL or PL/l applications including how data gets into that field; how that field is used to set other fields; and how that field is used in comparisons. This data flow feature helps developers make better, smarter decisions about application design. It is especially useful for Millennial developers who may not have a wealth of hands-on experience with IBM z Systems technology. Topaz for Enterprise Data now provides high-speed, compression-enabled host-to-host data copying that exploits IBM z Systems zIIP processors, thus reducing the burden on its general processors. This fast, efficient copying enables developers to complete their work more quickly at less cost.
Compuware Corporation Releases Significant Upgrade to Topaz
Apr 1 15
Compuware Corporation released a significant upgrade to Topaz, its innovative solution for empowering IT organizations to continue making the most of IBM z Systems environments as experienced mainframers retire and a new generation of developers, data architects and QA professionals take their place. Topaz's new Program Analysis intelligently analyzes mainframe programs and presents the results of that analysis in a visually intuitive manner. This visual analysis empowers both mainframe-inexperienced and mainframe-experienced IT professionals to: readily and accurately understand COBOL and PL/I application logic and logical dependencies, even for applications with which they are not familiar and/or which are not well-documented; quickly identify problems such as undefined fields, range violations and dead code "then correct them before compiling; easily assess program attributes such as size, complexity, number of files and tables, etc.; easily assess procedure-level metrics such as number of performs, conditionals, GOTO statements, and McCabe complexity metrics; and better collaborate across development and operations teams to find and fix code issues.
BMC Software and Compuware Partner to Help Customers Dramatically Improve IBM(R) z Systems(R) Economics
Feb 17 15
Compuware Corporation and BMC Software, Inc. are partnering to dramatically improve the economics of IBM® z Systems ownership. By doing so, the two companies are empowering customers to significantly reduce mainframe opex—even as they more aggressively leverage their high-value mainframe applications, data and processing capacity to meet the challenges of the digital economy. Mainframe workloads are growing significantly as web, mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) applications drive increasing transaction volumes. Capabilities offered on the newly-debuted IBM z13 are also likely to attract new workloads—including high-performance analytics, Java and Linux®. This workload growth is precipitously driving up the Monthly License Charge (MLC) for IBM mainframe software, which for sub-capacity environments is generally impacted by the high rolling four-hour average (R4HA) of mainframe utilization for all applications on each LPAR—measured in MSUs. Therefore IT can most effectively reduce its sizable IBM z Systems software costs by both tuning each application to minimize its individual consumption of mainframe resources and orchestrating application workloads to minimize the LPAR utilization peaks they generate collectively at any given time. BMC and Compuware are uniquely enabling customers to achieve these outcomes by integrating three complementary solutions: BMC Cost Analyzer for zEnterprise is a financially intelligent workload management solution that enables customers to identify MLC cost drivers and take appropriate measures to reduce those costs—such as moving workloads to non-peak periods, running IBM subsystems on fewer LPARs, and capping LPAR utilization. BMC MainView provides real-time identification of application performance issues, enabling customers to quickly eliminate wasteful MSU consumption. Compuware Strobe delivers deep, granular and highly actionable insight into the behavior of application code in the IBM z Systems environment, allowing mainframe owners to quickly pinpoint inefficient sub-routines that can cause MSU consumption to be 20x or more greater than necessary. One integration allows BMC Cost Analyzer to call Compuware Strobe for a detailed analysis of the specific application component for peak MLC periods, enabling customers to proactively tune applications that have the great impact on their monthly software licensing costs. A second integration with BMC MainView allows customers to either automatically or manually invoke Strobe performance analysis—empowering mainframe staffs to more quickly, efficiently and consistently perform cost-saving tuning tasks.
