Americas Promise Alliance Elects Kate James to its Board of Directors

Americas Promise Alliance announced that Pearsons Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Kate James, has been elected to its board of directors. She is based in Seattle, Washington. Prior to joining Pearson, James was Chief Communications Officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, leveraging the foundation's voice in support of the organizations global and domestic initiatives. Before Gates, she held senior leadership roles in the financial services industry including heading communications globally at Citibank and leading the advocacy and sustainability practice at Standard Charter Bank. She serves as a board member for both Vital Voices Global Partnership and Wedu, which are committed to empowering women around the world, and also as a Director of the Pearson Affordable Learning Fund.

America's Promise Alliance announced that Rasheed Merritt, a leader on the State Farm Human Resources team, has been elected to its board of directors. He replaces Kathy Payne, the senior director of education leadership at State Farm, who is retiring from her post. Merritt is currently an Assistant Vice President in Human Resources.
Americas Promise Alliance Appoints Stefanie Weiss and Rick Cruz as Vice Presidents

Americas Promise Alliance named two new vice presidents to its senior leadership team as the organization moves into the final quarter of its GradNation campaign, a national movement to reach a 90% high school graduation rate by 2020. Stefanie Weiss brings experience from Points of Light, Experience Corps and Encore.org, the University of Maryland, and the National Education Association to her new role as vice president of communications and knowledge management. Rick Cruz brings experience from the Education and Youth Practice at FSG, Teach for America, and DC Prep Public Charter Schools to his new role as vice president of mission advancement. In her new role, Weiss will lead communications efforts at Americas Promise, including branding and messaging, public relations, publications, web development, and social media. She will also lead the organizations knowledge management work, including overseeing the organizations research institute, the Center for Promise. Most recently, Weiss was the chief communications and marketing officer at Points of Light. In his new position, Cruz will oversee fund development and manage corporate partnerships. Cruz previously advised corporations, foundations and nonprofits on strategy and organizational development as a leader of the Education and Youth Practice at FSG.
