RTI International to Expand R&D Efforts on CO2 Capture

RTI International announced that as part of an effort to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide from coal-fired power plants, the U.S. Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has awarded the company two new projects to develop and test transformational technologies for CO2 capture. Under a $2.7 million award, RTI researchers will continue the development and scale-up of RTI's non-aqueous solvent based CO2 capture technology with engineering partner Linde Group and Norwegian research entity SINTEF. The process currently is being tested at small scale in RTI's facility in North Carolina, under funding from DOE-NETL. The new award will allow the process to transition to large bench scale/small pilot testing on actual flue gas, substantially leveraging SINTEF's existing pilot facility outside Trondheim, Norway. If successful, the new project will position the technology for large scale slip stream testing. The overall program is also substantially supported by CLIMIT, the national Norwegian program for CO2 capture R&D, under an international cooperation framework between the U.S. Department of Energy and the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. A second, $1.6 million award will allow RTI to develop novel solid CO2 adsorbents which have additional step-out performance and cost savings potential compared to current CO2 sorbents that RTI is testing under an existing NETL-funded effort. These novel sorbent approaches are based on hybrid metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and dendrimers, unique materials with advantageous physical and chemical properties for CO2 adsorption.

RTI International Strengthens Executive Leadership Team

RTI International announced changes to its executive leadership team. Aaron Williams, who has led RTI's International Development Group (IDG) since 2012, will become executive vice president of Government Relations and Corporate Communications. Paul Weisenfeld will take over as executive vice president of IDG. The changes are effective July 1. Williams moves into the newly created position after years of experience in international development with RTI and the U.S. government. He was vice president of international business development at RTI from 2003-2009, after which he was appointed by President Obama as Director of the U.S. Peace Corps, a role he served in until returning to RTI in 2012. Williams also previously served for 22 years as a senior official at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where he attained the rank of career minister in the Senior Foreign Service. Weisenfeld first joined RTI in 2013 as vice president of global programs after more than 20 years at USAID, where he achieved the Senior Foreign Service's high rank of career minister. He played an integral role in establishing the Bureau of Food Security, which he then directed, and setting up the agency's heralded Feed the Future initiative. In his new role, Weisenfeld will apply his extensive knowledge of international development to advance RTI's mission of tackling some of the world's most pressing global challenges. Weisenfeld will lead RTI's efforts across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to solve complex health and education problems, improve early childhood development, enhance accountability in governance and tackle the global youth employment crisis.

RTI International Launches Wholly Owned Subsidiary in India

RTI International established a permanent presence in the country, a wholly owned subsidiary, Research Triangle Institute Global India Private Limited. The subsidiary, based in New Delhi, will help RTI better serve its clients by supporting programs focused on sanitation, women's health and gender equity, noncommunicable diseases, sustainable energy and climate change. Currently, RTI is leading several research projects on advancing the early detection and prevention of cancer in India and will host a symposium in New Delhi Feb. 19-20 that will bring together leading experts from various stakeholder groups to address the burden of cancers, and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) more broadly.
