The Michigan Department of Community Health appoints Allen Jansen as the New Interim Director of Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital

The Michigan Department of Community Health appointed Allen Jansen as the new interim director of Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital. Jansen, who most recently served as the corporate director of community and residential services at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, will head Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital on an interim basis while MDCH completes its search for a permanent, fulltime director. Previously, Jansen served as the executive director at Hope Network Behavioral Health Services. His experience also includes work with Kent County Community Mental Health, where he was the director of mental health services. Jansen currently serves as a board member for the Mental Health Foundation, the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan, and the Michigan Federation for Families and Children. Jansen is taking over for Cynthia Kelly who will return fulltime to her position as director of the Bureau of State Hospitals and Behavioral Administrative Services. Kelly had served in both capacities since May. The department will continue to interview for the permanent, fulltime position during Jansens tenure at Kalamazoo.

Jim Haveman Steps Down as Director of the Department of Community Health, Effective September 12

Gov. Rick Snyder announced that he has accepted the resignation of Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Director Jim Haveman effective September 12. While Haveman had intended to stay into 2015, he decided to step down after recently experiencing a mild stroke. Haveman was appointed director of MDCH in 2012, and has served as the group executive of the People Group since the beginning of 2014.

The Michigan Department of Community Health Receives Contract to Investigate Tuberculosis Nationwide

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Bureau of Laboratories has been awarded a $3.6 million contract to provide Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotyping for the entire United States from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The state public health laboratory will receive specimens from all 50 states to perform this molecular genetic testing making Michigan a global leader. This is the third genotyping award made to MDCH. The CDC contract will run from October 2013 through November 2017.
