A. Eugene Washington, MD, MPH, chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University and president and CEO of the Duke University Health System, has been named to the boards of directors for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. Prior to joining Duke University, Dr. Washington served for five years as vice chancellor of Health Sciences, dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and chief executive officer of the UCLA Health System. He was also a distinguished professor of Gynecology and Health Policy at UCLA. Dr. Washington currently serves on the board of directors of Johnson & Johnson. He has served on a number of professional and government boards and committees, including on the board of trustees of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Scientific Management Review Board of the National Institutes of Health, and the board of directors of the California HealthCare Foundation and the California Wellness Foundation, where he was chair of each board. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and their respective subsidiaries (KFHP/H) reported combined earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2015. The companies reported, total operating revenue of $15.3 billion for the quarter ending September 30, 2015, compared to $14.3 billion in the same period in 2014. Operating income was $363 million in the third quarter of 2015 compared to $768 million in the same quarter last year. Capital spending in the third quarter of 2015 was $583 million, compared to $627 million in the same quarter in 2014. KFHP/H reported a net loss of $115 million for the third quarter of 2015 versus net income of $997 million for the same quarter last year. KFHP/H's operating income remains steady.
For the nine months that ended September 30, 2015, total operating revenue grew to $45.6 billion, compared to $42.2 billion for the same period in 2014. Year-to-date operating income was $1.9 billion compared to $2.2 billion in the same period last year. Year-to-date capital spending was $1.9 billion through the third quarter of 2015, compared to $2.1 billion in the same period last year. KFHP/H's capital spending reflects continued investments in upgrading technology and facilities to deliver high-quality care and service to members, including the recent completion of a Radiation Oncology Therapy Center at Kaiser Permanente'sAnaheim (California) Medical Center Campus.

Vanessa Benavides has been chosen to be the new senior vice president and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. Benavides will oversee the organization's commitment to ethics and compliance that includes the safeguarding of personal and health information of Kaiser Permanente's more than 10 million members and approximately 180,000 employees. She will also be responsible for maintaining a culture within the organization in which employees do the right thing and feel comfortable speaking up when they encounter actions or activities that do not align with Kaiser Permanente's mission, principles or policies. In her new position, Benavides will direct planning, oversight and coordination of activities to ensure compliance with regulatory mandates, laws, accreditation and licensure requirements, as well as Kaiser Permanente policies. She also will provide key leadership in identifying, evaluating and prioritizing enterprise risks, and coordinating activities with other internal risk-management units. Benavides currently works at Tenet Healthcare, where she serves as vice president and chief compliance and manages ethics and compliance programs across the company.
