Connecticut Innovations Awards $300,000 to AgriFuels LLC and Owlstone Inc
Jul 11 13
Connecticut Innovations (CI) announced that it has awarded grants totaling $300,000 to two small businesses - AgriFuels LLC and Owlstone Inc. - through its Connecticut Innovation Challenge program. The program, launched in November, provides research grants to small, technology-oriented Connecticut businesses that team up with Connecticut universities to solve technology challenges posed by large corporations. The small businesses must contribute matching funds to advance their projects. AgriFuels will partner with Yale University and the University of Connecticut to address a challenge posed by BASF to develop green refineries. The $150,000 CI grant will allow AgriFuels to pursue its project titled 'AgriFuels Algae Cultivation Pilot Demonstration for Biomass Pathways.' The goal of the project is to validate AgriFuels' innovative algae cultivation technology at pilot scale and demonstrate that its 'green refinery' technology may be used not only to cultivate diverse strains of algae but also to process the algae into high-value lipids, biomass and raw materials for use in the specialty chemicals, nutraceuticals, food and biofuels industries. Owlstone will partner with the University of Connecticut to address a challenge posed by Ultra Electronics Measurement Systems Inc. to develop more portable and robust power and display technology for security and defense applications. Owlstone will use CI's $150,000 grant to pursue its project titled 'Advanced Graphical Display for High Information Content Handheld Chemical Threat Detector.' The goal of the project is to refine software that will rapidly relay information about the types and levels of airborne chemical threats detected by Owlstone's pioneering, miniaturized chemical sensor technology to a graphical display on a handheld chemical threat detection device.
