BitTorrent Releases its Privacy-Focused Chat App Bleep as Closed Pre-Alpha for Windows

BitTorrent is offering its new server-less messaging app as a closed pre-alpha for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Formerly referred to as BitTorrent Chat, the company has announced its official name as 'Bleep' and released a screenshot of the app's current design. The key differentiator for the service is that it doesn't rely on a central server to store your data; instead, Bleep will offer device-to-device communication with public key encryption. Whenever user start a conversation, BitTorrent will also generate a temporary encryption key to keep everything extra secure. Users will be able to sign-up with email, mobile number, or 'incognito,' which means they'll have no account or personal identifiable information.

Overland Storage, Inc. announced a collaboration with BitTorrent, Inc. to embed BitTorrent Sync(TM) within Overland's SnapServer DX Network Attached Storage (NAS) product line. The SnapServer DX with BitTorrent Sync solution effortlessly synchronizes files between geographically-dispersed mobile devices, tablets, desktop clients and networked storage systems with no transfer limits or subscription fees. The SnapServer DX with BitTorrent Sync solution allows users to create their own secure private cloud for accessing data globally or syncing data between systems for file sharing, mobile access or disaster recovery by simply exchanging secret keys. With the SnapServer and BitTorrent Sync solution, data is encrypted and then transferred directly between devices via a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol. The data can only be decrypted on a device equipped with a shared decryption key. In addition to the SnapServer DX NAS, BitTorrent Sync is available for Windows, OSX, Linux and FreeBSD, and provides applications for use on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Kindle devices.
