U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs Sues B&H Foto & Electronics Corp. for Allegedly Violating Federal Requirements at Brooklyn Warehouse
Feb 25 16
A lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs alleges that B&H Foto & Electronics Corp. has systematically discriminated against Hispanic employees and female, black and Asian jobseekers at its Brooklyn Navy Yard warehouse. As a federal contractor, B&H is prohibited by Executive Order 11246 from discriminating in employment on the basis of race, color, sex or national origin and is required to take affirmative action to ensure that equal opportunity is provided in all aspects of employment. B&H’s Brooklyn Navy Yard warehouse exclusively hired Hispanic men into its entry-level laborer job group, contributing to the complete exclusion of female employees at the warehouse and the near exclusion of black and Asian employees at the facility. B&H promoted and compensated its Hispanic workers at a significantly lower rate than comparable white workers, leading to lower pay, fewer opportunities to advance and a near-total exclusion of Hispanic workers from higher level clerical, managerial and supervisory positions. Hispanic employees were also subjected to racist remarks, degrading comments and harassment at the worksite. In addition to its findings regarding hiring, compensation and promotion discrimination and harassment, OFCCP found that B&H’s Brooklyn Navy Yard warehouse: Failed to keep and preserve required personnel and employment records; Relegated Hispanic warehouse workers to separate, unsanitary and often inoperable restrooms; Failed to provide designated restroom or changing facilities for females. Filed with the Office of Administrative Law Judges, the complaint asks the court to enjoin B&H permanently from discriminating against female, black and Asian individuals in hiring, and discriminating against Hispanic individuals in promotions and compensation; and to require B&H to ensure and maintain a working environment free of unlawful harassment, intimidation or coercion. OFCCP is also seeking complete relief for the affected class including lost wages, interest, front wages, salary adjustments, promotions and all other lost benefits of employment and a reform of discriminatory policies. If B&H fails to provide relief as ordered, OFCCP requests that all its government contracts be canceled and that it be debarred from entering into future federal contracts. Headquartered in Manhattan, B&H has supply contracts with the General Services Administration and the Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Investigation valued in excess of $46 million. OFCCP filed its complaint after determining that it was unable to secure a voluntary agreement from B&H to take corrective action.
B&H Photo Releases Pentax K-S2 DSLR, Retractable 18-50mm Lens, and the AF201FG Compact Flash Unit
Feb 9 15
B&H Photo announced that the Pentax K-S2 DSLR Camera a compact, weather-resistant camera that is designed to provide excellent image quality, as well as built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC for image transfer and camera controls with a mobile device. This new 20.1-megapixel model introduces many features, such as a dedicated selfie button and a 3.0" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD screen. Alongside this camera is the release of the retractable HD PENTAX DA 18-50mm DC WR RE Lens, which will be included with the K-S2 Lens Kits, and the compact AF201FG Flash. To provide the optimal image quality, the 20.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor found in the K-S2 eliminates the AA filter for sharper photographs. This system works in combination with the PRIME M II Image Processing Engine to produce low noise images and video at a native sensitivity of up to ISO 51,200, also, it introduces Advanced HDR and Clarity Enhancement modes that can bring out more detail from shadows as well as produce photos with improved contrast and sharpness. The sensor also benefits from an in-body Shake Reduction mechanism that reduces the appearance of camera shake and enables an AA Filter Simulation setting that can prevent moiré and aliasing issues when needed. And, full HD 1920 x 1080p video recording is possible at up to 30 fps. This camera is speedy with the inclusion of the SAFOX X 11-point AF system in which 9 points are cross-type for high-speed focusing. Low-light shooting is also covered with AF sensitivity down to -3 EV. The K-S2 also has a continuous shooting rate of up to 5.5 fps and a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 second. Further benefitting shooters is the 3.0" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor on the rear of the camera enabling composing of images in many different angles and shooting scenarios. It can even flip out so photographers can easily make use of the new selfie-button. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC can make sharing images much simpler, as well as shooting with full controls via the Live Sync mobile app. The HD PENTAX DA 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens, with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27.5-76.5mm offers users flexibility, and it has a retractable design for maintaining a smaller profile when not in use. Aspherical lenses are used to ensure edge-to-edge sharpness, and it has both the HD PENTAX coating to reduce flare and ghosting and the Super Protect coating to prevent scratches and other damage. Additionally, it has a direct current AF motor and a weather resistant construction to match that of the K-S1. The highly compact AF201FG flash is designed for use with Pentax DSLRs, this P-TTL-compatible flash features a guide number of 65.6' at ISO 100, as well as a bounce head design for positioning between -10° to +135°. When used on full-frame cameras, it can cover wide-angle lenses up to 28mm or lenses as wide as 16mm with the integrated wide panel in place, and on APS-C cameras it can cover 19mm and 13mm lenses. P-TTL use avails both first- and second-curtain sync options, and manual control can be set at either full or 1/4 power. The compact design requires just two AAA batteries for use and, depending on the battery type, recycles times range from four to seven seconds between flashes. Additionally, matching the design of the two lenses, as well as many of Pentax's DSLRs, this flash also has an all weather construction for use in inclement conditions. The K-S2 comes in a variety of color options and kits and will be available as a body only in Black, Black/Orange, and White, as a one-lens kit with the 18-50mm lens in Black, Black/Orange, White, Black with Racing Stripe, White with Racing Stripe, Desert Beige, Forest Green, Stone Gray, Black/Pink, and White/Lime, or as a two-lens kit with the 18-50mm and 50-200mm lenses in Black, Black/Orange, and White.
B&H Photo Announces Powerful New NVIDIA Graphics Cards
Jan 23 15
B&H Photo announced the arrival of powerful new NVIDIA graphics cards. The GTX 960 series features high clock speeds, insane over-clock speeds, and top-tier total
combined memory speeds -- as high as 7,010 MHz. These new cards will feature a Maxwell infrastructure, which used a smaller die (almost 30% smaller than previous models) and fewer transistors and still boosted the speed almost 12% over its competitors. The NVIDIA 960 series is sure to be a showcase for peak performance in
mid-range cards, and is likely to be the centerpiece for do-it-yourself kit modders and base desktop builders. The cards will also include DirectCU II Technology and 0 dB Technology for faster heat dissipation and quieter performance, ensuring the cards run up to 30% cooler and three times quieter than previous versions. The over-clock capability of the cards will boost game performance by as much as 12% over previous versions in the series. A five-phase, super-alloy power supply ensures 30% less power noise, and almost triple the lifespan for long-term gaming. Certain GTX 960 models can even reach a maximum 5120 x 3200 digital resolution via dual DisplayPort connectors.
