It also announced an independent commission was being created to assess WHO's widely criticized response to the epidemic, after the UN agency admitted last month it had been caught napping on Ebola and pledged reforms to avoid similar mistakes in the future. Aylward, she said, will be responsible for coordinating all the different aspects of the agency's response to the devastating outbreak, which has killed nearly 9,000 people, almost all of them in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The WHO Executive Board, currently holding its 136th session, has appointed Dr. Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti as the new Regional Director for WHO's Africa Region. Dr
Moeti was nominated Regional Director by the health ministers of the 47 Member States of the WHO African Region at the annual Regional Committee for Africa in Cotonou, Benin, in November 2014. Dr. Moeti will take up her appointment for a five-year term on 1 February 2015, succeeding Dr. Luis Gomes Sambo who has served as Regional Director for the past 10 years.

World Health Organization appointed new Africa chief Dr. Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti immediately vowed to improve the response of countries worst hit by the epidemic. The regional committee for Africa in Benin voted for the Botswana-born WHO veteran to take over from Luis Gomes Sambo, who has held the post since 2005.
