Eastern Media Reportedly Bids For Carlyle's Stake In Eastern Broadcasting

Eastern Media International Corporation (TSEC:2614) is bidding to buy The Carlyle Group LP (NasdaqGS:CG)’s entire 61% stake in Eastern Broadcasting Co., Ltd. which is worth around $240 million, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Carlyle is expected to make a decision on the bid by the end of January 2014, the sources said. The valuation is substantially below Carlyle's expectations. "They are asking for such a high price. It is just way too unreasonable...because it's not going to be easy to find a buyer willing to pay their price," said one of the sources. Carlyle id seeking as much as $700 million. Carlyle is expected to take a decision on the bid by the end of January 2013, the sources added.

Carlyle Reportedly Planning To Sell Eastern Broadcasting For $700 million

The Carlyle Group LP (NasdaqGS:CG) plans to sell its stake in Eastern Broadcasting Co., Ltd. for about $700 million, people familiar with the matter said. Carlyle holds a roughly 67% stake in the company and has been contacting private equity firms to find buyers, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the talks are confidential. The sale may draw interest from local Taiwanese media groups, two of the people said. Eastern Media International Corporation (TSEC:2614), which owns 21% of Eastern Broadcasting, is interested in acquiring Carlyle’s stake, one person familiar with the matter said. It has an agreement with Carlyle giving it the right to make the first offer, according to the people. Carlyle hasn’t disclosed its total investment in Eastern Broadcasting. According to Bloomberg, spokesmen for Carlyle, Eastern Media and Eastern Broadcasting declined to comment. Eastern Media shares rose 3.7% to end Taipei trading at TWD 12.70.
