Uganda Signs €70 Million Financing Deal for 44.7 MW Muzizi Hydropower Project

The Uganda Government has signed an agreement with KfW Development Bank and the French Development Agency to jointly invest €70 million on the construction of the 44.7MW Muzizi hydropower project in the district of Kibaale. Under the mutual reliance initiative, KfW agreed to provide €4 million, while French Development Agency and the Uganda government will contribute €45 million and €21 million, respectively, for the project. Planned to be developed by Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL), the hydro facility will be built at River Muzizi, and will also spread in the districts of Kibaale, Kyenjojo, Kabarole, and Ntoroko. Construction work on the project, which expected to generate power to more than 60,000 households, is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

KfW Development Bank Launches Extended Portal on Cooperation with Developing Economies

KfW Development Bank has expanded its transparency portal: Interested parties now have access to comprehensive information as to how the promotional bank uses both public and its own funds in around 140 new projects in developing and emerging economies. The portal provides detailed information on projects supported by KfW on behalf of Federal Government and other donors and which began after 1 January 2013. The information shows how funds are applied and how this impacts on the people affected. KfW also provides information through aggregate data on the countries and sectors in which it has worked since 2007. The data compiled over this period can be accessed on the new portal. The company transparency initiative provides the public with an account of collaboration with developing and emerging economies, Dr. Norbert Kloppenburg stresses, Member of the Board of KfW. Here, KfW focuses not only on transparency in house, but also supports transparency in its partner countries. The company convinced that transparency reduces corruption, leads to greater responsibility and encourages mutual accountability, Dr. Kloppenburg says. The new, modern portal takes its lead from the needs of the user. With only a few clicks of a mouse, interested parties can find out in which countries and sectors KfW is active. Graphics also illustrate how money is used on projects and where it comes from. The presentation is based on the support categories used by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This allows a comparison with other donors and organizations which have international development initiatives.
