The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) has awarded contracts to three companies for advanced technology demonstrations for the Radiation Awareness and Interdiction Network (RAIN). General Electric received an $8.1 million contract for research, development, design, characterization and demonstration of a node of the RAIN system. Passport Systems received a $7 million contract although no description was provided about the proposed research. Physical Sciences' contract is for $6.2 million and is also for research, development, design and demonstration of a node in the RAIN system. Under the system, radiation detectors, ancillary sensors, image capture systems, and automated analysis and data communications would all be integrated to detect, localize and provide information on a specific conveyance carrying threat materials.
