Axis Healthcare Launches Insurance Coverage to Protect Hospitals Against Losses from Pandemics

AXIS Capital Holdings Limited announced that AXIS Insurance Company's AXIS Healthcare division has launched an innovative new medical catastrophe (“contagion”) business interruption product for hospitals in the U.S. and Canada to protect against a loss of revenue caused by the outbreak of a contagious disease. The AXIS Healthcare Medical Catastrophe Business Interruption and Extra Expense product includes coverage for any disease that is transmitted by direct or indirect contact. These diseases include bubonic plague, MRSA, Legionnaires’ Disease, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, Hantavirus, SARS, West Nile Virus, HIV, Ebola Virus, Marburg Virus, Lassa Fever, Influenza, and Bird Flu, as well as other lesser-known viruses or plagues. The new product would also provide coverage for diseases that have not yet been discovered by science, or a disease that could mutate into a pandemic at some point in the future.

On December 18, 2015, AXIS Specialty Limited, AXIS Re SE, AXIS Specialty Europe SE, AXIS Insurance Company, AXIS Surplus Insurance Company and AXIS Reinsurance Company (the Companies) renewed their $500 million secured letter of credit facility with Citibank Europe plc for a four year term (the Facility) pursuant to a Committed Facility Letter. The Companies are subsidiaries of AXIS Capital Holdings Limited, a Bermuda exempted company. The Facility is subject to the terms of the Master Reimbursement Agreement among the Companies and Citibank Europe plc dated May 14, 2010, as amended. The Facility serves as the principal secured letter of credit facility for the Companies. Under the terms of the Facility, up to $500 million may be used by the Companies to issue letters of credit which will be principally utilized to support reinsurance obligations in the United States and elsewhere.

AXIS Insurance entered into a collaboration agreement with Aon Affinity to provide underwriting service for A&E Advantage, Aon Affinity's professional liability insurance program. The A&E Advantage program caters to architecture and engineering firms. With AXIS Insurance, the A&E Advantage program will now be able to offer coverage for architecture and engineering firms with billings up to $7.5 million.
