J.D. Irving, Limited Announces More Than $513 Million in Projects to Upgrade its Facilities

J.D. Irving, Limited has announced more than $513 million in projects to upgrade its facilities that are expected to create 1,200 jobs during construction and 326 permanent jobs. The province has signed a 25-year contract with JDI that gives the company access to more than half of the Crown land softwood available. The deal will be reviewed by the government every five years and JDI must make promised investments in its mills while following sustainable forestry practices.

J.D. Irving, Limited Invests $30 Million in Maine Sawmill

The sawmills division of J.D. Irving, Limited announced it is investing $30 million to upgrade and add equipment to a softwood sawmill in Ashland, Maine, that closed in 2008. Most of the lumber produced will be sold to major retail lumber yards located throughout the US Eastern Seaboard, but Keith said some might make its way to New Brunswick. The mill is expected to create 50 jobs during the construction phase and 60 full-time jobs once in operation. The new mill's tentative launch date is late spring of 2014, pending the success of state and local permits.
