Shape Security, Inc. Key Developments

Shape Security Appoints John Stewart to its Board

Shape Security announced that John N. Stewart, Cisco's chief security officer and a senior vice president, has been appointed to the company's board of directors, effective immediately. With over 25 years of experience in the security space, Mr. Stewart brings a wealth of knowledge in enterprise security. He joins a board with deep security and networking experience, alongside Ted Schlein, managing partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and founding CEO of Fortify; Gaurav Garg, co-founder of Wing Venture Partners, former partner at Sequoia Capital and founder of Redback Networks; and Ray Rothrock, partner emeritus at Venrock and CEO of RedSeal Networks.

Shape Security Launches Product to Reinvent Website Security

Shape Security launched a revolutionary new product to protect websites against the most dangerous cyber attacks. The ShapeShifter(TM) is a network security appliance that prevents website breaches by immediately disabling the capability of malware, bots and other scripted attacks to interact with web application. The key to being able to block attacks on websites from malware and other scripts is a technique called real-time polymorphism. Malware has long used polymorphism, rewriting its code every time a new machine was infected, to easily evade antivirus detection systems. Shape is now reversing this advantage, using polymorphic code as a powerful new foundational tool for website defense. Shape has invented patent-pending technology to be able to implement real-time polymorphism, or dynamically changing code, on any website, to remove the static elements that botnets and malware depend on for their attacks. When a ShapeShifter protects a website, instead of encountering an application with fixed elements that are trivial to program an attack against, cybercriminals now face the daunting task of making their malware interact with a web application that has become a moving target, constantly rewriting itself. All of this happens transparently, with legitimate users continuing to see the original, unchanged user interface.

Shape Security Expands Executive Team with Three New Hires

Shape Security announced three hires to strengthen the company's executive team: Mark Rotolo, VP of sales, Michael Coates, director of product security, and Dr. Ariya Hidayat, director of engineering. Michael Coates, director of product security at Shape, was previously head of security at Mozilla, where he built the security program from the ground up to protect Firefox and other products. Coates is also the Chairman of OWASP. Dr. Ariya Hidayat joins Shape as director of engineering. He is the author of PhantomJS. Hidayat joins Shape from Sencha, where as engineering director he led a team building hybrid HTML5 run-time platforms. He also created Esprima, which serves as the foundation of many JavaScript tools. Mark Rotolo is Shape's new vice president of sales. He has 25 years experience in technology sales, leading three companies to acquisition for a combined $628 million. Rotolo most recently served as vice president of sales - West at Palo Alto Networks. The three join a team which includes Google's former click fraud czar and the former general manager of Cisco's Application Delivery business unit. The company also announced in October that Dr. Xinran Wang, the creator of Palo Alto Networks' WildFire product, had joined Shape as chief security scientist.
