Guardian Industries Corp. agreed to spend more than $70 million to reduce emissions from producing glass for automobile windshields and office and home windows and will pay a fine of $300,000. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department disclosed the settlement over alleged pollution that violated the Clean Air Act at Guardian's flat glass manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. Under the proposed settlement filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit, privately held Auburn Hill based Guardian will invest more than $70 million to control emissions of smog forming nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter and sulfuric acid mist from all of its manufacturing facilities. Guardian will also fund an environmental mitigation project valued at $150,000 to reduce particulate matter pollution in the San Joaquin Valley in California and pay a civil penalty of $312,000.

Guardian Industries' Glass Group in Europe has opened a new headquarters office in Bertrange, Luxembourg. Approximately 120 personnel have relocated from their current offices at the company's production site in Dudelange, Luxembourg. The new office provides a dedicated and professional working environment for the regional team that encompasses a number of functions, including Supply Chain, Regional Sales, Regional Marketing and other strategic as well as operational support functions.
Guardian Industries Corp. to Close Jefferson Hills Plant

Guardian Industries Corp. will close its Jefferson Hills plant and lay off about 114 employees beginning in early August. According to a notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, the shutdown of the 1000 Glasshouse Road facility will be effective Aug. 4. Plans to close the plant were announced to the workforce last October, according to a June 4 letter to the Labor Department by Plant Manager John Buckner. The layoffs will be done in stages, with 109 between Aug. 4 and Aug. 31 and the rest between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31.
