AARP and University of Illinois Announces Opening of The Tech Nest at AARP in Research Park

AARP and the University of Illinois announced the opening of The Tech Nest at AARP in Research Park, the latest addition to AARP's Innovation portfolio. The new technology lab, a 2,700 square-foot innovation-focused facility, enables AARP to collaborate with students and faculty on leading-edge, technology-based research and creative solutions to address the needs of the 50-plus population. The Tech Nest will focus on developing prototypes in the fields of artificial intelligence, mobile apps, information security, biometrics and software engineering. By leveraging the university's academic research and adjacent startup community, AARP will create opportunities to enhance the daily lives. The University of Illinois Research Park is home to innovation centers for multinational corporations and publicly traded firms including ADM, John Deere, Yahoo!, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Caterpillar, State Farm, Capital One, Grainger, CME Group, and Abbott.
AARP Names New Board Members and Officers

AARP welcomed new members and officers to its all-volunteer Board of Directors, including the organization's newest Board Chair, Joan Ruff, and President, Eric Schneidewind, the Board member who serves as AARP's principal volunteer spokesperson. Along with four other officers, they will serve until June of 2018. Joan Ruff, J.D., has worked as an executive, human resources consultant and attorney. After more than 10 years as a tax attorney, she joined William M. Mercer Inc. She then held executive management positions at Zurich Financial Services and H&R Block. As Board Chair, Ruff serves as the presiding official of the Board of Directors as it directs the affairs and funds of AARP. The Board Chair also serves as chair of the Governance and Compensation Committees. Libby Sartain, MBA (Vice Chair) is an independent advisor, working with companies on human resource issues. As Board Vice Chair, Sartain provides leadership in membership and member services matters, and serves as chair of the Member and Social Impact Committee. Jewell D. Hoover, (Secretary/Treasurer), is a retired senior official with the United States Treasury Department. She worked for 28 years as a bank regulator and was a senior spokeswoman for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. She serves on the board of Fifth Third Bank, Foundation for the Carolinas, American Association for Bank Directors and the University of North Carolina's Center for Banking and Finance. As Secretary/Treasurer, Hoover provides leadership in financial, fiscal and audit matters and assures that the Board exercises its responsibility in directing the funds of AARP. She serves as chair of the Audit and Finance Committee.
AARP Appoints Chris Holman as President

Chris Holman, CEO of Michigan Business Network, has been appointed to a two-year term as president of AARP Michigan, effective March 1. As president, Holman will serve as the lead AARP volunteer in Michigan, which is home to 1.4 million AARP members. He also will chair the AARP Michigan Executive Council, an all-volunteer panel made up of team leaders from regions across the state. Holman, of Williamston, will partner with AARP Michigan State Director Paula D. Cunningham and work with staff and volunteers to help achieve AARP's vision, mission, and strategic priorities. He also will act as the principal volunteer spokesperson for AARP in Michigan, communicating AARP's messages statewide. Holman is the founder and CEO of Michigan Business Network. For over 40 years he has used his skills as an entrepreneur to successfully start businesses, launch magazines, run companies, serve on community boards, and host various talk show programs on both radio and internet. He currently is the primary host of Michigan Business Beat and co-hosts This Week in Small Business talk programs on Michigan Business Network.
