Philip Day has made a surprise bid for Dobbies Garden Centres Limited after Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO) put the chain up for sale. Retail billionaire Philip Day is understood to be considering the deal to diversify his Edinburgh Woollen Mill empire. Other potential suitors looking at Dobbies include The Garden Centre Group Holdings Ltd. (Wyevale Garden Centres). The Garden Centre Group Trading Limited owner Terra Firma Capital Partners Limited is believed to have appointed bank Goldman Sachs to table a £175 million bid for Dobbies Garden Centres Limited owned by Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO). Tesco has set a deadline of April 20, 2016, for initial offers for Dobbies. Several private equity firms are also said to be preparing bids ahead of deadline. Wyevale success would see Dobbies Edinburgh head office close. Staff at Dobbies is yet to be told about the sale, sources add. Sources suggest a successful bid by Wyevale for Dobbies could attract scrutiny from competition regulators and prompt the disposal of a number of stores.
